There is a British saying that goes: "All work and no play makes jack a dull boy". That is why many people believe it seems to be there is no single enjoyment in working so hard without giving time for leisure; however, some people believe that striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven't planted. In the article "The Ant and the Grasshopper", Aesop and Maugham presented their stories based on this title. Aesop talked about how Ant was able to save some food in the summer time through his hard work while Grasshopper was dancing and having fun around. But when the winter time came he was with empty larder. Maugham also used the same story by referring his own story to two brothers "Tom" and George". George, who work so hard like the Ant was ended up in little amount of money, and he grew old with red face while Tom, who left his family for two years just because of pleasure was ended up in wealth. As far as I'm concern, though Maugham's story sound so interesting, but the ending doesn't encourage hardworking.
The behavior of Tom and his choice of lifestyle in the Maugham's story is very bad, and this is very rampant among men of these days. It reminds of a friend of mine whose uncle married about eight years ago. His uncle traveled abroad to spend two years, and after he came back, he felt he was comfortable enough, so he began to misbehave though not excatly like Tom, he was going out with girls from one club to another without even bother he was married. Eventually, he ended up with nothing. All what he has gathered for two, he lost everything within a year.
The ending of Maugham's story doesn't encourage people to be hardworking. If we should look at our society nowadays, all what we are enjoying is because of hard work. Take for instance, some of our past heros like missionaries, evangelists, scientists, engineers, exploreres, armies not to mention all. If decided to go for pleasure like Tom, no one could know what the world would be like today.
For those people who think what Tom did was a good choice of lifestyles, just because it makes him look younger and healthy. It seems they haven't yet understand that without hard work, nothing like success. Through hard work, lucky comes, and with lucky, you are blessed, and once you are blessed, you are successful.
Therefore, hard work really plays alot. Moreover, it is the key to success, so work deligently on any project you undertake. If you really want to be successful, be prepared to give up your leisure time and work hard and on weekends. Also have faith in yourself. If you come up with a new idea that you believe in, don't allow people to discourage you from pursuing it. Mind you, always have this in your mind "Whatever we work for surely last longer".
