The Ant and the Grasshopper (ESSAY)

There is a British saying that goes: "All work and no play makes jack a dull boy". That is why many people believe it seems to be there is no single enjoyment in working so hard without giving time for leisure; however, some people believe that striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven't planted. In the article "The Ant and the Grasshopper", Aesop and Maugham presented their stories based on this title. Aesop talked about how Ant was able to save some food in the summer time through his hard work while Grasshopper was dancing and having fun around. But when the winter time came he was with empty larder. Maugham also used the same story by referring his own story to two brothers "Tom" and George". George, who work so hard like the Ant was ended up in little amount of money, and he grew old with red face while Tom, who left his family for two years just because of pleasure was ended up in wealth. As far as I'm concern, though Maugham's story sound so interesting, but the ending doesn't encourage hardworking.
The behavior of Tom and his choice of lifestyle in the Maugham's story is very bad, and this is very rampant among men of these days. It reminds of a friend of mine whose uncle married about eight years ago. His uncle traveled abroad to spend two years, and after he came back, he felt he was comfortable enough, so he began to misbehave though not excatly like Tom, he was going out with girls from one club to another without even bother he was married. Eventually, he ended up with nothing. All what he has gathered for two, he lost everything within a year.
The ending of Maugham's story doesn't encourage people to be hardworking. If we should look at our society nowadays, all what we are enjoying is because of hard work. Take for instance, some of our past heros like missionaries, evangelists, scientists, engineers, exploreres, armies not to mention all. If decided to go for pleasure like Tom, no one could know what the world would be like today.
For those people who think what Tom did was a good choice of lifestyles, just because it makes him look younger and healthy. It seems they haven't yet understand that without hard work, nothing like success. Through hard work, lucky comes, and with lucky, you are blessed, and once you are blessed, you are successful.
Therefore, hard work really plays alot. Moreover, it is the key to success, so work deligently on any project you undertake. If you really want to be successful, be prepared to give up your leisure time and work hard and on weekends. Also have faith in yourself. If you come up with a new idea that you believe in, don't allow people to discourage you from pursuing it. Mind you, always have this in your mind "Whatever we work for surely last longer".

Summary of both Aesop's fable and Sumerset story

In Aesop's fable "The Ant and the Grasshopper" Aesop talked about how Ant was able to stored some food through his hardwork in the summer time while Grasshopper was dancing, having fun around. But when winter time came, Grasshopper had an empty larder, and he went to Ant weather he might get some food unfortunately, he didn't.
Sumerset described Tom and George as the Ant and the Grasshopper in his story, but the end of these  two brothers wasn't like the end of Ant and the Grasshopper. George, who is hardworking ended up with red face and some little amount of money. While his younger brother(Tom), who act as "Grasshopper" ended up in wealth.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy

The Aesop's fable  and the Sumerset story is similar, but their ending was different. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy implies to Sumerset story, and this was due to the way George handled his situatuon. Being hardworking doesn't mean you shouldn't give yourself time to relaxe and enjoy your life. Atleast, you work for the money, and you should be able to enjoy it by yourself. If you don't and you died, someone else would spend it. Nevertheless, I still support the Sumerset story because it hints those people who are hardworking like George that they should know how to manage themselves while they are hardworking. And also, that being hardworking doesn't determine sucess at all times, so they have to take life easy. But the only part I didn't support is the ending. The ending of Sumerset story doesn't encourage hardworking. The way Tom enjoyed his life was bad. It shows that he doesn't care about his family. That is a selfish life.

Home work.

In "The Ant and the Grasshopper", W. somerset talked about two brothers. The younger one, "Tom", left his wife and two children and his job. He said he didn't like work; he went to different Capitals in Europe to enjoy himself, and he spent two happy years. His older brother "George" spent all his days working so hard aiming that he would retire at fifty-five to his house and enjoy playing golf and cultivates his garden. At the end, Tom ended in Half a million pounds, a yacht, a house in London, and another house in the country with his young and good-looking stature. while George grew red in the face with little amount of money. In the fable, Grasshopper did something related to the Tom, but he earned nothing at the end. While Ant did exactly like George, and he was able to sustained himself during the winter period. I agree with Aesop because his story persuaded the reader to work hard.

Ant and the Grasshopper (Opinion)

What I saw in the story of Tom and George was quite different to what was being said in the Fable "The Ant and the Grasshopper". It was like a "metaphor", but not really because Ant was very busy working and at the winter time he was able to ripe his good hard work he had sowed . Nevertheless, I think the behavior of Tom shows that he was an irresponsible person. He is not family oriented. Behaviors like this has made many men lose their potentials.

I am "The Ant"

I am "The Ant"! The reason why I said this is that I always tried to prepare myself for tomorrow. There is an adage that says "Don't brag about tomorrow because you don't know what the day may bring". As a result of this, I always prepare so that I won't get stuck or be looking for help form other people when things are scarce or not available

Summary (Friendship Bond)

In The Friendship Bond" by Mary Brown Parlee. Mary talked about the research they conducted; she said over 40,000 readers express their opinions on what they looked for in close friendship. She said friendship is unlike marriage or ties that bind parents and children or something regulated by law. Mary mentioned trust and acceptance which are the most important elements in a successful friendship. She tells us that according to the psychologist, trust is very important because it allows people to be honest and to share important secret with one another. But Mary discovered that most friendship ends as a result of betrayed.

Interpretation & Opinion (friendship Bond)

In "The Friendship Bond" Mary Brown Parlee says more than 40,000 readers express their thought on what they looked for in close friendships like: what they expected of friends, what they were willing to give in return and how satisfied they were in return and with the quality of their friendships. Mary explained that friendship appears to be a unique form of human bonding. It has it's own subjective principle which is enhance feelings of warmth, trust, love, and affection between two people. She made mention of the questionnaire on friendship that appeared in the march issue of Psychology today, which confirmed that issue of trust and betrayal are central to friendship. Not only that it also suggested that readers should not look for friends only among these who were like them, but find many who differ in race, sexual preference, religion, and ethnic background. Furthermore, Mary mention social critics and how they pointed to the dislocation and isolation that they think grows out of the high mobility rate among Americas and a loss of community supports. In my own point of view, I think social critics are more or less right with their points because nowadays people do not have trust in each other, and also they turn away in time of emotional crisis. Most especially Immigrants which are peculiar people that suppose to be in one fold, but instead they backbite each other; they find it difficult to confide in each other, and turn away to each other when it comes assistance. This could definitely bring isolation and dislocation. But all the same, friendships are alive and well because the survey in the article shows us the part that the social critics do not see.

Response ( Sunday in the park)

There was a time when I was in the parking lot next to my house with friend. Two woman were arguing about the parking space, one was Spanish and the other one was black. According to what I heard, these two woman were living in the apartment next to each other. And most of time they used to disturbed each other especially the black woman by playing loud music at all times. so this particular day, I thought the Spanish woman didn't park very well; she parked in-between her parking space and the black woman's space. Unfortunately, this leads to their dispute. Meanwhile, the black woman had been doing such things for about five to six times said by the Spanish woman. Actually, I didn't watched the whole event. I had to leave since the matter are getting complicated. Probably, they might have resolved the issue because I heard that the matter was later took to the civil court.

Sunday in the park (summary)

In the article by Bel Kaufman "Sunday in the Park", the author talked about two families who were arguing just because of one child threw a spade of sand at the second child. Morton, the mother of the second child felt very unconfortable with the situation, but she didn't react until her husband step in, and the father of the obese child told his son that it was ok to continue throwing the sand if he wanted to because they were at a public park. When Morton heard that she decided to leave the park, because she felt that fighting wouldn't resolved anything.

Sunday in the park" (Opinion and Inetrepretations)

In the article, two family were fighting just because one child throw a spadeful of sand at the child that belongs to the second family when they were playing in the park. As a result of this, the two family begin to have conversations that want to lead to fight. At the end, one family decided to take their child and leave the park. In my own opinion, Violence doesn't solve a conflict at all times especially when it comes to children matters. Most of the time parents like to fight because of their children which creates hatred in some children of different parents, but most of the time we would discovered that these children often get closer despite the quarrel between their parents.

what I like about the story was that, the story looks like a real story. when I was reading it, I felt like I was watching the movie of the article, but on the contrary, some part of it doesn't look like real because the author didn't mention the name of the second family that was involved in the conversations.

Interpretations and opinion (Henrietta Lacks)

Sarah Zielinski tried to tell us how Henrietta's cells were useful for Scientist to determine how cells works and how they can conquer diseases. She showed us a short background of who Henrietta Lacks was and why her cells were so important. Also, how Rebecca got interested in the story and how she won the trust of Henrietta's family. Where I liked was the last paragraph. She urge people not to have negative idea about the tissue culture because many medicines depend on tissue culture.

66-92

The writer talked about how she was able to find her way to Turner Station, where Henrietta had lived when she was alive. Her aim was to see if she could get in-touch with David Sony, Lack's Junior, but it is unfortunate. Later, she get in touch with the Reverend in Turner station, who connected her to Courtney speed and people who were going to lunch a museum in honor of Henrietta. In short, she got some information in the CNN documentary video she watched, before she left turner station.
Meanwhile, Courtney had promised Skloot that she would tell her whatever she knows about Henrietta once she has taken permission from Henrietta family.
When Skloot reach Clover, she met Cootie, Henritta's cousin, who was once Henrietta's baby. Henrietta used to take care of cootie when his polio got bad. Skloot explained all what Cootie told her about the spirit in Lacks Town. How the spirit caused disease into human body. In short, she said Cootie wasn't sure if the spirit got Henrietta or Doctor did it.
On October 4, 1951 Henrietta died around the mid-night. Before she died, she gone through lots of pains; the cancer had spread all over her body to extend that her system couldn't even performed any operation. After her death, Gey was able to get in touch again with Henrietta's body through Day permission. If he could discovered something different to the cells he had been growing.

I like the spirit that Skloot got. The spirit of courage; the spirit of determination. Despite all what she faced in order to get in touch with the Lacks family, and the discouragement of those who had tried to write something about Henrietta, she still continnue till she achieved her aims.

Comment on group post

If you don't treat tumor on time, the tumor can become malignant and kill the person. Yes, as TeLinde believes in chapter three of the book. He belived that carcinoma in situ was simply an early stage of invasive carcinoma. so, it should be treated on aggressively and in time in order not to be complicated. Next time, i think our group we need to give the major fact and with details.

In Clase Quiz 1-6

1.) The Tuskegee Institute open the first HeLa factory  in 1952 for supplying cells to laboratories and researchers and operating as a nonprofit. The company was named Microbiological Associates.

2.) Henrietta Lacks was born in 1920

3.) George Gey successfully culture first immortal human cell line using cells from Henrietta Lacks’s cervix in 1951. And the reason he named the cells "HeLa" was for identificatiion. By using her first two letters of her last and first name.

4.) HeLa cells was used by Scientists in 1952 to  developed polio vaccine.

5.) Henrietta was treated for cervical cancer at Hopkins Hospital. The Hospital was founded in 1889.

6.) HeLa cells became the first cells ever cloned in 1953.

Chapter 4-8 (page 34-66)

Chap 4-5 : The name "HeLa" was derived from Henrietta Lacks by Mary Kubicek, a fresh graduate of Physiology, who was working as an assistant in George Gey's Laboratory. She used the name "HeLa" as a label for Henrietta Lacks cells she grew. George Gey was a Biologist who specialized in Culture. Gey and many researchers had been trying for years to develop a perfect cell culture, searching for liquid to get the perfect balance. Sometimes either Mary or Margret ( Gey's wife) would ran to collect umbilical cord at Hopkins Maternity Ward.
According to Skloot, the biggest problem facing cell culture at that time was contamination. She said, Bacteria and a host of other micro-organisms could find their way into cultures from people's unwashed hand, their breath, and dust particles floating through the air, and destroy them. But due to Margret profession as a Surgical Nurse, Gey Lab was able to grow cells. Because she taught Gey and his workers including Scientists who came study in the lab how to keep culture sterile.
When Henrietta lacks cells were brought into Gey Lab, they accumulated in intensity, doubling their numbers everyday as long as they had food and warmth, Henrietta's cancer cells seemed unstoppable said by Skloot.
Meanwhile, Henrietta didn't aware about her cells growing in laboratory. After she left the hospital, she went back home performed her daily route until she was seeing some signs and symptoms after some weeks of  her X-ray Therapy.
Chap 6 : Skloot talked about how she was able to get in touch with Henrietta's daughter(Deborah) She was so excited for Deborah's reaction when she told her she wanted to write a book about her mother and she was able to receive as much as possible information from the 1920s to the 1990s. Also, she explained what one the Gey's student Roland Pattillo, a Professor of  Gynecology said; how researchers had deceived blacks in order to study how syphilis killed from infection to death.
Chap 7: After Henrietta radiation Therapy, George Gey began to broadcast his first Immortal cells which had been growing in his lab. Explaining that his lab is using those cells to find a way to stop cancer. Gey began to ship Henrietta cells to different nations as they were ordered by many scientists across the world. upon the spread of Henrietta cells and rapid of new research, there were no news of how it might help stop cancer
Chap 8: Skloot talked about the agony and pains Henrietta went through at the Hopkins before she died. How Doctors were performing different kinds of treatments, and the experiments that George Gey carried out on the second specimen he collected. She said that black people never questioned white professional judgement in those days, they accept whatever they said because they knew that doctors know the best.
According to Skloot, there was no record that Gey ever visited Henrietta in the hospital or said anything about her cells except Laure Aurelian, a microbiologist who was Gey's colleague at Hopkins. This cells culture started on January 17, 1912 when Alexis Carrel, a fresh surgeon at Rockefeller Institute grew his Immortal chicken heart. Scientist had been trying ti grow living cells for many years.

Prologue 1-33

In the story written by Rebecca Skloot "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks". The writer explained in the prologue how she went in search of informations about Henrietta Lacks' cells and who she was. She first became interested in Henrietta Lacks cells when she was taking Defler's class for high school credit. Skloot talked about how Henrietta Lacks spent her life right from her childhood till the time she was discovered by Dr. Jones, the gynecologist who diagnosised her tumor that she had cervical cancer.  In addition, Henrietta Lacks cells samples were collected at the Hopkins Hospital during her diagnosis treatment by Dr. Lawrence and he gave them to George Gey who usually performed experiments on every kind of cells.
